On January 17, 2009, U.S. health authorities advised consumers to avoid consuming products that contain peanut butter until information becomes available about which products have been affected by a salmonella outbreak.  The Centers for Disease Control reported that 474 people in 43 states have been infected by a salmonella outbreak linked to peanut butter products and that six people have died.  Further information about the source of the outbreak may be available within the next few days.
